Tunnel environments are notoriously difficult for lighting communication systems. Thick concrete walls, long distances, and curved structures weaken or block wireless signals, causing unstable performance for DALI, 4G, and other wireless lighting protocols.
To overcome these challenges, one of our project customers upgraded their tunnel lighting network using MicroNature’s PLC (Power Line Communication) lighting solution combined with our AI vision sensors—and the results were exceptional.
Why PLC Was Chosen for Tunnel Lighting
Before switching to PLC, the customer faced recurring issues using traditional protocols:
- DALI wiring was complicated and difficult to maintain over long tunnel distances.
- 4G and wireless technologies suffered major signal loss inside the tunnel.
- Response delays caused safety concerns for drivers and workers.
After evaluating multiple solutions, PLC became the ideal choice because it transmits all control signals through existing power lines, avoiding the wireless-signal problem entirely.
Outstanding Stability in Low-Signal Tunnel Conditions
Once the PLC system was deployed, the customer immediately saw improvements:
- Stable communication even in areas where wireless signals were extremely weak
- Reliable dimming and on/off control across the entire tunnel
- Consistent device response, regardless of tunnel length or structure
The PLC network delivered smooth and uninterrupted performance—something the previous systems could not achieve.

AI Vision Sensors for Smart Tunnel Lighting Automation
To enhance safety and energy efficiency, the customer also integrated our AI vision sensors into the PLC network. The combination provided smarter, real-time lighting automation:
- Vehicle detection: Lights automatically turn on when vehicles approach
- 10% low-brightness standby mode: Saves energy and maintains basic visibility
- Instant brightness response: Lights jump to full brightness the moment movement is detected
- Targeted illumination: Only active zones brighten, reducing power consumption
This AI-driven automation significantly improved visibility, safety, and operational efficiency inside the tunnel.
Key Advantages of PLC Over Wireless Lighting Protocols
The customer highlighted several major benefits of choosing PLC over DALI, 4G, Zigbee, LoRa, and other wireless systems:
- Exceptionally stable operation in areas with poor or zero wireless coverage
- Higher reliability than DALI and all wireless communication protocols
- Integrated smart control with AI vision sensor automation
- Energy-efficient 10% standby mode for long tunnels
- Instant lighting response when vehicles enter the detection zone
- Lower installation and maintenance cost due to simplified wiring
Cost Savings & Reduced Maintenance Workload
Because PLC uses the existing power lines, the customer enjoyed clear cost and operational advantages:
- No additional signal wiring needed
- Lower installation cost
- No wireless interference issues
- Less troubleshooting and reduced maintenance time
For long or complex tunnels, these benefits translate into significant long-term savings.
